Dark Bark Sold?
Dark Bark Sold?

The group decided at the end of last session to forego resting and try to move the piece of dark bark sooner rather than later. This resulted in no chance to spend any karma between the runs. This is the story of the groups 3rd in game day.

Mira spent alot of the early morning trying to research Zeta-ImpChem to find out any information that could help identify this piece of dark bark they took. Additionally, she spent some extra time checking to find out how hardcore this corp might be regarding shadowrun runners, so they might change up their approach. Mira was not able to turn up much, only that Zeta was a big time pharmasuticals company, making al manner of pills, injections, and powders for personal consumtion. It was also noted that their was a general lack of information on the workings of this corp. It seems they don’t have alot of news releases or make big time news often. The group got together at their new base of operations, a seldoM used beach with a small fire pit which the dwarf squats at. Makng some calls to their fixers, they were able to turn up a few potential leads that might help shed some light on the bark. The dwarf was able to locate a street dealer, who might have a lab and be able to look at the bark. The troll was able to turn up two names, one of a talismonger running a local shop and a biology student at the local university. Mira turned up a chemist who worked in the local area for a company making compouds and body rubs. The elf wasn’t able to locate anyone specifically, as he seemed more interested in finding details specifically about the dark bark instead of trying to find a scientist or lab to have an item looked at. It might be important to note that he mentioned the bark specifically.

The group checked the talismonger first, the owner of the local " Herbal Emporium Magic Shop". With a little discretion money, Hobbler was able to find out the bark was indeed radiating a faint aura. Specifically, it was darker and wispy. The talismonger also stated he thought the signature had faded, as though this piece was once alive and had a powerful aura. This seemed like news to the group, as they had not considered this yet. Next the group made their way to the drug dealer( “Pace”) located by Arby. After a rough greeting the group was brought into a small lab area where the dealer was able to run some tests on the bark. He seemed interested in it, and took a shard of the bark as payment for his services. He also promised to contact them if his tests went well and this bark was something he might be able to use. Finally starting to understand what they might have, the group decided the chemist (“Johnny” ) would have the best chance at identifying the bark, so he was the next stop. Johnny worked at a company called " Miracles", which no one knew much about except they make rubs, creams, and compounds. After going through what seemed to be loose security they were taken to a full lab, and told this was Johnny’s working area in R&D.

Johnny ran a battery of tests, and after checkign the read outs and energy being produced by the bark, made the group an immediate offer to purchase it personally, on the spot. He offered the group 5,000Y to sell it to him directly and not involve anyone else. The group thought this was not enough, and asked if the company might make an offer, rather than Johnny himself. After calling a supervisor down to check the read out, and generating a call to upper management to confirm payment, a price of 10,000Y was negotiated. Arby provided his account information to recieve payment, which he then split to the others. The entire piece of the dark bark was now gone. The group was not able to take a sample to student biologist ( “Art”).

Feeling good about getting rid of the bark, the group had hoped to lay low for a bit but fate was not on their side. Hobbler got a very odd call, from a person named Ramero Carlosa. He strongly suggested the troll come meet him right away, to discuss business they might have together. Searching the name through the matrix, Mira turned up that this guy was tied to the ownership of a number of nice hotels across Miami, including the one they shot a couple of Los Reyes bikers and had a poker match at. Arby recalled the Carlosa name, and seemed to think he might be no3 or 4in the leadership of the Carlos Mafia. Thinking this might be an “offer he can’t refuse” Hobbler decided to head to the meet while the others ate their dinner at the resturaunt downstairs. hobbler was told to ask for Pam, who turned out to be a tall blond who escorted him up the to the floor where the spa, exercise area, locker rooms were. After a nod to the attendant, Pam led Hobbler into the men’s locker area, and asked him to change into a robe before proceeding further. While he changed, she made no effort to hide the fact that she was visually inspecting his entire person. Satisfied he had no additional items on him, he was then led to a steam room and told to enter. Only a single person, Ramero Carlosa, sat in this room.

Ramero indicated he had incriminating information about the trolls group, where they shot up some innocent bikers outside one of his hotels the day before. He also indicated he had heard of others asking questions about a “white troll and his small buddy” which the dwarf seemed to fit the description of. After this information, he made it clear that he hoped blackmail would not be neccessary, and offered to provide some cover from prying questions ( presumably from Zeta ) and also deliver fee if the group would simply carry a message to a group of people for him. It seems the groups willingness to draw weapons in the middle of the day and gun down people was a quality he was most interested in. The target was the Los Reyes gang itself, and the message was to cause as much damage and gore as possible. He wanted the hit done durign the day, and indicated he wanted the group to destroy the property instead of potentially stealing it. He wanted an impression made it seemed, because this was not the first propery the Los Reyes gang had attacked recently.

Feeling squeezed, Hobbler accepted the offer. He then turned to a damage control mindset, and asked about the payment, and the incriminating video footage. The payment offered was 1,000Y per team member, and the origional footage would be turned over at completion of the job. Feeling this was the best offer that might be able, Hobbler agreed to everything. Ramero said he had two potential targets in mind, and told the troll to decide which he’d rather hit. A BTL warehouse or a bar owned and used by Los Reyes as a hangout. The group felt used in all this, and wanted to side with Los Reyes against the mafia, but because of the Los Reyes’s violent habits, didn’t feel comfortable trying to start that conversation. After much planning and scheming on how to double and triple cross the big boys, they ultimately decided to complete the job as asked, even though they didn’t like it. The chose the BTL warehouse, thinking that would have the fewest innocent people around, and cause the most property damage when they destroyed the BTL chips.

The call went out at 8am the following morning, but they asked for explosives to complete the job. Ramero delivered a goodie bag at 8:30am, but added stipulation that the job should be completed by noon. Mira had already launched her drone once they had an address, and began recon as soon as it arrived. The group decided they wanted to use a canal that ran near the warehouse as a way to infiltrate and escape without being seen on the roadways. The scuba supply shop opened at 9am, and it wasn’t until 9:15 that they had their gear and was on their way. By 9:30am, Mira had done a thourough visual inspection, and prowled the matrix for possible nodes, so she was fairly certain of the cameras, angles, sensors being used. Mira immediately begin to probe the network work a possible weakness. The group arrived near the warehouse, in the canal un
noticed as intened at 9:45am. by 10:30am, Mira had completed her first round of testing but had not yet breached the system. They waited until Mira had hacked the system, but that wasn’t until 11:30am. Feeling the need to complete the remainder quickly, Mira looped the video feed for a few minutes and the group launched into a second story window. Taco was the first to enter, but found himself between two guards on a catwalk. He quickly performed a fancy leap over the back guard, and placed a burst square into his back, dropping him in one smooth motion and catching him to use as possible cover. The second guard turned, and shot Taco with a hail of bullets. Taco was clipped but not severely wounded. Hobbler went in next, with the dwarf strapped to his back. Hobbler rushed the second guard, and almost split him in half in one motion. Somehow, he remained standing. Arby was quick to follow up though, and riddled him with ammo piecing rounds that left little remaining. Below, alot of activity could be heard, and two vans were spotted. Soon after, a guard rushed from the second story room, and he was yelling commands for others to attack. It was clear this was likely the leader. He drew a shotgun and blasted two shots at Hobbler. His aim was off on one, but tagged Hobbler on the second shot. Additionally, two other guards came out to support him, and fire machine gun rounds at the team, causing minor damage to Taco and Arby. hobbler wable to dodge or resist the few rounds that were aimed at him. Hobbler cut the boss down, and another guard over the course of the combat, and Arby dropped a couple frag grendages over the side for good measure. A flash grenade and a smoke grenade were tossed into the far room, which left the guys still inside it disoriented. Mira brought her drone into the building and took out a guard on the lower level trying to open the door to let the vans escape. The goodie bag had two monofilament grenades in it, and one was dropped beneath the front van, which shredded the underside of the hoses, wires, and soft connectors which completely diabled the van. A second monifilament grenade was placed in the computer system after Mira copied alot of the data over. The group located a small safe, and took some delivery documents but blew the safe apart with some decoy documents and a frag grenade on the way out. The BTL chips were all piled into the Vans, gasoline spread all around, and high explosive grenades to destroy the vans. The only things taken were the bosses shotgun, the documents, some data Mira copied, and two small credsticks. The building was left to burn down as the group swam away quitely at 11:50am. At noon exactly, the account hobbler left with Ramero had a deposit of the agreed amount. Feeling soomewhat relieved that he held up his end of the agreement, the group has now decided to rest up, lay low, and come up with some new options since they’re on a couple of groups radar, seem to be working for the mafia now, and might have Los Reyes as an enemy ( hopefully not since one survivor left with the name of a street gang " Ragers" as the ones responsible.) Only time shall tell if the drug dealer sample leads to anything, the mafia calls again, or Zeta locates the group.

First Run !
First Run

This is the first gathering of this group of shadowrunners. I will give a brief overview of the players before we get into what happened.

*Arby – This a dwarven street samurai, who seems awfully fond of chewing people apart with his machine guns and assault rifles. He seems to have little regard for the living, and possibly less for law encforcement and corp rights.

*Taco – This is an elven adept generally focused on speed and movement. He also is a sniper of sorts, and has a more tactical bend for his actions. His english is poor though, so he had trouble getting his ideas and abilities explained to the others.

*Mira – This is an agorophobic female elf that the others have only seen through a vid screen. She seems to be quite the hacker, but not so good a pilot. She seems to have a handle on browsing the matrix though, and provided several bits of information for the group, including some floor plans and camera spying.

*Hobler – This albino troll seems to be a mixed bag. He is fairly strong, but seems to prefer using a nerve strike to incopacitate his enemies instead of attacking them outright. Additionally, he found himself in a poker match without any gambling skill or bluffing ability. He coincidentally lost all his seed money.

On to the run itself…

Each character was called by their fixer to meet a particular Johnson at a seafood resturaunt to talk about a possible job as extra security for a gamling tournament coming up. They met the Johnson, who identified himself as “Mourice” over lunch. He explained this match would have alot of high rollers with known criminal contacts and wanted the characters there to support a particular player he was sponsoring. He offer the players 500Y to provide support for this player, and provided the neccessary information on where to meet and the details of the match. The names of the other players were avoided, as this might not be a legal tournament.

Upon picking up the “gambler”, the players identified he was a very laid back party dude. He did however seem aware there was going to be the game that day, so onward they went to the Espurito Santos hotel and spa. The hacker was able to find out this was a legal business owned by the Carlos mob, and there were occasionally legal matches held here, but no further information on todays match could be found. The street sam noted the Carlos mob had a number of legal businesses around Miami, and most of them were fronts for other activities.

Not wanting to go through valet, Arby parked down the street and everyone walked from there to the entrance. The entire team failed to hear the sounds of motorbikes speeding towards them, and as such took a hail of bullets from two machine pistols riding on Rapiers. There was a third chopper, firing a large pistol as well. Thanks to some brave and tactical cover provided by Hobler, the gambler survived this attack, but only by the hair of his teeth. The remainder of the group quickly returned fire, and although some incidental damage was taken, the group proved too much for the gangers who fell dead in front of the hotel. A closer inspection by Arby led to finding a gang tatoo, identiying these as the Los Reyes. A quick search by Mira discovered these guys to be very violent, and related to the drug trade in Miami. Emergency first aid was applied by Hobler, which was appreciated by the gambler. During this first aid, he noticed the invitation to the tournament, and after looking it was address to " the bearer of this pamplet". Since the gambler seemed unable to continue, the troll took the seed chips and the invite. It was left to hotel security, which presumably was part of the Carlos mob, to clean up the mess and call an ambulance.

The characters proceeded to the poker tournament, with the big white troll taking the role of the gambler. The security in the penthouse was 4 black clad full trnech coat wielding humans with shotguns and a cold stair. Additionally, the game seemed catered with a wet bar for the security each player had. Hobler was able to use some luck at several critical times to get an early pot which was fairly large. His lack of any real skill however, showed as he continually lost for most of next 5 hours as his stash got less and less. It was clear however, that one human player was winning the lions share of the hands. Eventually, a different player called him out as a cheater, and the game became really tense, as the backup teams all drew arms, as did the tournament security. Just as it looked like a bloodbath was imminent, the winning player spoke up, singled the troll out as having played with him before in other tournaments and would vouch for his credibility. Thinking quickly, Hobler spoke up for this player which seemed to calm the situation and avoid the gunfight that might have been. This left hobler asking himself why he was singled out, as he had never seen this guy before. After a few more hands, Hobler eventually lost all his chips to the winner as well. He did however notice, as the winner raked in the last pot of winning he singled out one chip in particular, which was placed in his pocket and not cashed out. The winner also seemed appreciative for the vouching, so he tossed a 500Y chip back to Hobler as thanks.

Content with having done the best the could, avoiding more wounds and even getting a few free drinks, the group retired for the night. Meeting “Mourice” the next day for lunch again, he payed them the other half of their promised rate, and asked them to explain their side of what happened. Satisfied with the explanation, he thanked them for continuing the match since the gambler could not. When Hobler asked about the chip that was not cashed him, the entire group was sternly advised to forget everything about that part. Quickly taking the hint, the group as a whole never mentioned it again. Instead they asked for additional work, maybe something that pays more.

“Mourice” had such a job, but it was a last minute job for an extraction from a nearby island. The players almost lost this job opportunity, as they were not ready to leave immediately. Thanks to some speedy driving by Mira, they were able to gather their gear and make the deadline. The job was to take “Mourice’s” speedboat out to the island, locate and extract a particular female scientist. Arby was able to pilot the boat fairly well, and even avoided some rocks that were added the this island to make water access more difficult. No name was given, but several photos for identification were provided. Upon reaching the island, the group scouted the island, initially seeing several beings on the third floor, as well as several guards in the front of the build and one on patrol. As Arby infiltrated from the beach, he unknowningly triggered some pressure sensors scattered around the middle ring of the island. He was able to reach the side of the building, but the motion sensor brought a patrol guard over the the remainder of the group still on the beach head. Hobler was able to quickly incapacitate him with a nerve strike, and bind him so he could not escape. Mira took some additional time, and was able to locate the hidden nodes for the sensors, and triggered several around the island to distract the guards, allowing Hobler to join Arby at the building. Taco drew his sniper rifle and skirted the perimeter, planning to provide cover fire and support should it be neccessary.

With a couple climb checks, the pair were now on the roof, and found a hatch secured by a wired maglock. Lacking any knowledge of hardware, the two instead decided to pry the hatch open. Several good pulls later, they broke it free and gained access, but this again set off another alarm. Arby and Hobler noticed there were several heat sources in a nearby room, and invesitgated there first. Alerting Taco that a fight might break out, he took aim at the guards outside hoping to snipe them before they could rush into the building. Upon opening a door marked “Laboratory” the two were met with stun batons by two security guards. One connected with Hobler but was unable to bring him down. Hobler retaliated with a nerve grip, reducing that guard to a paperweight holding the floor down. Arby immediately placed his SMG into the chest of the second guy and splattered the wall behind him, leaving a bloody mess at the doorway. After checking the room, aside from a number of computers neither of them knew much about, they noticed a dark piece of bark suspended in a glass tube near the center of the room. Hobler found some gloves, and a capsule to keet the bark in for the time being, but what this might be is anyone’s guess.

Upon hearing the engagement, Taco proceed to drop one of the guards immediately, but missed his second shot. The two guards had not heard the internal fighting at this point, so instead decided to charge the sniper, hoping to close on him before he could get any future shots off. This proved a failed plan, as Taco was able to drop both but not before one was able to spot and send a burst his way. Sustaining minor damage, Taco then advanced to the building for additional support options. Back inside, Arby and Hobler located another door nearby, and was able to hear guys talking about defending this position and not letting the intruders capture “her”. Mira was able to bring her drone into the hallway, in case additional firepower was needed. Arby failed to kick the door in, and the guards inside prepped for the incoming attack.

Arby and Hobler both kicked the door together, which left the door wide open with a big white troll standing in the doorway. Both security guards opened fire, and Hobler took several shots. These would have dropped a normal man, but Hobler was tougher than most, and was eventually able to step out of the doorway. Mira piloted her drone in the door, and laid down supporting fire and Arby tossed a flash grenade into the room. Mira managed to drop on of the guards Hobler hit before he moved, and the remaining guy tried to toss a grenade out into the hallway in a last ditch effort to cause the attackers some serious damage. This proved a really bad plan, because he was blind and tossed it straight into a wall which bounced the grenade back at his feet. The shrapner tore the security guard apart, and the blast even tagged Hobler and caused some damage to the drone as well. Arby was able to duck behind a wall and avoid any serious wounds.

Inside the room, they found a female wired into a computer system. With no wireless access, they finally just unplugged her and ran. This left her in a state of disorientation, confusion, and a severe migrane. The escape was fairly easy, it seems this was a small detachment and didn’t bear the full security a corp was rumored to have. They called “Mourice” who told them a dock to deliver the female to. although not at the docks, a thug handed each of the characters a credstick for 750Y. They left the boat at the dock as instructed, and split for the night.

Their goal is hopefully to find more information about what just happened, and maybe to find a buyer for this black piece of bark they found. This may prove difficult, as they’re currently not sure what they have, if it’s anything at all.

More next session…
